Drawing in gray ink on laid paper
134x144 mm

Known as one of the greatest exponents of Russian art at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, he was born in Ukraine and then later moved to St. Petersburg where he studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. The first years of his artistic career are characterized from an academic-style painting that is slowly abandoned thanks to the many journeys that allow him to get to know the newest pictorial innovations, in particular those brought about by the French Impressionists. The colors of his palette take on a new liveliness, brightness and the chromatic range expands, while the historical subjects are slowly overcome to make room for scenes of real life and portraiture. His participation in the “Ambulanti” group confirms his choice to open up to European pictorial innovations. Despite this, his painting will never abandon its clarity in the description of his subjects.
