Jean-François Portaels was a Belgian painter of the mid-nineteenth century. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. In 1842 he won the Gran Prix de Rome. He traveled extensively in Italy, Greece, Lebanon, Egypt, Judea, Spain, Hungary and Norway. Portaels painted mainly in oils and was an excellent portrait painter, but also the author of religious, historical and, in particular, Orientalist works.
