«The painting presents the typical characteristics of the works of its author, the French painter Hyon. The two French gendarmes are portrayed on horseback, alert and concentrated in scanning the surrounding territory. Captured in a moment of inspection, the soldiers, powerful on their horses, are depicted in a wooded and peripheral environment.
The work does not differ from Hyon's typical pictorial characters and motifs. The French artist is in fact known for his depictions of soldiers and for the care he takes in painting the details of their uniforms. Critics entrust him with a particular talent in the representation of horses, this is also clearly visible in the work under examination.
The brushstrokes, although not defined, are constructed in such a way as to give consistency and shape to all the elements depicted , from the vegetation, to the faces, to the equines on which Hyon's studio has focused throughout his career.
