The original was created at the behest of the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II, as a gift to his wife Tsarina Alexandra Fëdorovna Romanova. It was manufactured in St. Petersburg in 1897 under the supervision of Michael Perkhin and Henrik Wigström, on behalf of the Russian jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé, of Fabergé.
