The painting shows a marked realism. The concentration and attention paid by the character in the act of opening the book and reading the lines of his newly written philosophical-religious thought are evident.
On the table the pen and the inkwell are witnesses of the act just completed by the write.
The painting, moreover, expresses a counter-reformist taste in accordance with the trend of the Catholic church of the 17th century by advocating an illustrious bishop, doctor of the church, such as Saint Augustine.
