The painting in question is taken from the work of Cesari, made popular and widespread by an engraving by Egidio Sadeler (1550 - 1600), of 1593. The composition is similar, with small variations in the colouring and in the details, but the scenographic layout is identical.
The rethinking of the present work is understandable given the great diffusion of the subject widely treated in Roman painting of the XVI / XVII century. For example the flagellation of Zuccari Federico and Sebastiano Piombo
The work is in good condition. It has a recent relining and is in a gilded wooden frame with leaves from the 17th century.
