Alfred de Dreux is one of the first romantic painters of the eighteenth century. Born into a family of artists, his father was an architect who in 1815 won the Grand Prix de Rome so the whole family moved to Rome where they could admire the ancient ruins. He met Theodore Gericault, who was one of his first teachers and exhibited numerous times at the French National Salon in Paris. His production is characterized by noble portraits and on horseback including the Duke of Orléans, son of Louis Philippe of France.
