Signed lower right. "The painting presents the typical characteristics of the works of its author, the French painter Hyon. The two French gendarmes are portrayed on horseback, alert and focused in scrutinizing the surrounding territory. Captured in a moment of reconnaissance, the soldiers, powerful on their horses, are depicted in a wooded and peripheral environment.
The work does not deviate from the pictorial characteristics and motifs typical of Hyon. The French artist is in fact known for his depictions of soldiers and for the care he takes in painting the details of their uniforms. Critics attribute to him a particular talent in the representation of horses, which is also clearly visible in the work under examination.
The brushstrokes, although not defined, are constructed in such a way as to give consistency and form to all the elements depicted, from the vegetation, to the faces, to the horses on which Hyon's study has focused throughout his career."
